Sausage Pizza

This Cooking Light masterpiece recipe has been our favorite for the past couple of years (or like basically since we have been married and I graduated from making strictly Hamburger Helper… haha definitely a step up!) There’s no sauce on this bad boy, it is pretty nontraditional! If you’re willing to try something different, we can be best friends forever.
And food doesn’t make me want to die every second now, so let’s celebrate with some pizza.
This recipe comes in two parts- the dough and the toppings/baking instructions. This does take a least a little planning ahead… the dough takes about 30 minutes to rise (well worth the wait!)
We love adding the spicy turkey sausage to ours… pork sausage also works though. Andddd cherry tomatoes are preferable, but we are kinda cheap and just cut up roma tomatoes πŸ˜‰
Oooooh and last pointer…. this recipe is turns out the best on a pizza stone if you have one. Ours is well loved (as you can see haha) but a regular pizza pan will work too.
Recipe from The Best of Cooking Light
Dough Ingredients:Β

  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 package of active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 3/4 cup warm water (100-110 degrees)
  • 2 1/24 cup all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Cooking spray or olive oil
  • Cornmeal

Dough Directions:Β

  • Dissolve honey and yeast in 3/4 cup warm water in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes or until bubbly
  • Spoon 2 cups flour into measuring cups and add flour and salt to yeast mixture- stir until a soft dough forms
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface- knead until smooth and elastic (about 6 minutes)
    • I usually just put it in my kitchen aid mixer and use the dough hook to knead it
  • Add enough of the remaining flour if to sticky (you don’t want it to stick to your hands)
  • Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray or olive oil, turning to coat the dough
  • Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size
  • Roll dough out into a 12 inch circle
  • Place dough on a pizza stone sprinkled with cornmeal
Recipe adapted from Cooking Light Fresh Food FastΒ
Topping Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb turkey sausage (again we like the “hot” but “Italian” flavor is also very good)
  • 1 tablespoon oil from sun-dried tomato jar
  • Coarse sea salt (to taste/optional)
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup shredded white cheese of choice (we like the “Italian” cheese blend)
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved (or a couple of roma tomatoes, chopped)

Topping/Baking Directions:Β

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees
  • While oven preheats, place shaped pizza dough on stone and place on the bottom shelf of the preheating oven, bake for 10 minutes
  • While crust prebakes, cook sausage in skillet until brown and crumbly (about medium-high heat)
  • Remove crust from oven, rub with sun-dried tomato oil and sprinkle with salt
  • Top with cheese, sausage and tomatoes
  • Bake at 450 on the bottom shelf for 8 minutes or until crust is golden brown and cheese melts

There’s about 350 calories per serving (which is a couple pieces)

We nom HARD on this pizza. Seriously, Sky and I never leave left overs haha. I love that there’s no sauce (I’m not a huge tomato sauce fan anyways). Its a little spicy and we freaking love it.
Let me know if you give this recipe a try, I wanna know what you think!!
